Order of Speeches at a Wedding: Who Says What & When?
Planning the order of speeches at a wedding can be tricky, but it’s important to get it right in order to ensure the smooth running of the day. Traditionally, the wedding speech order goes father of the bride, groom, best man and other toasts. However, in same-sex weddings, it's common for both partners to speak, and many brides now choose to give a speech, as do the bridesmaids or maid of honor.
Kicking off the wedding speech order is the father of the bride speech. If the father of the bride isn't present, this can be done by a close family friend. The father of the bride should welcome the guests, welcome the bride's partner into the family, compliment the bride, praise the bride's partner and explain why they're a great couple, and toast the newlyweds. He should avoid speaking for too long and only include a list of thank-yous.
The groom should follow, and his speech should include thanks to the bridesmaids and best man, a thank you to the bride's parents, and a toast to the bridesmaids.
The best man should then take the microphone and thank the groom, give a funny story, thank the bride and bride's family, and make a toast to the new couple.
Finally, it's time for the other toasts. This could include the father of the groom, the mother of the bride, the maid of honor and the bride herself. But you can decide on an order for your wedding speeches that works for you!
